I keep a small 1/4" socket set, flashlight, some zip ties and a roll of electrical tape, a few spare bulbs (they burn out one by one but come in packs of two, so I keep the extras handy), as well as a pair of jumper cables, a tie down strap (for securing things from sliding around), a pair of work gloves (in case I need to stop and help someone move or something on the way home), an extra pair of socks, tire pressure gauge, bottle opener, a couple pens, usb charger with cord, an extra quart of oil, sunglasses, wet wipes, napkins, and a few other things in my car. They make nice trunk organizer things like this http://www.amazon.com/Handy-Laundry-Trunk-Organizer-Black/dp/B011871YXA/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1465141137&sr=8-5&keywords=trunk+organizer
Those things are great. Everything you need, no sliding around, and if you need some space you can just lift it out and leave it at home. The USB charger and pens and some other small stuff live in the glove box, but all the tools and stuff stay in the trunk.
My list is probably pretty overkill, but I keep a similar stash in my other vehicles. The wife's wagon has a REALLY nice little storage compartment already, though. And my truck is a truck so it's got a LOT more tools and stuff in it. They all fit under the front and rear seats.
