I'm totally the same way. Good news, though! It is totally possible to paint the back of the tank in situ!
Supplies:
What I did was push all the equipment to the sides of my aquarium. This meant that I had to temporarily relocate my filter intake and outputs and push the power cords for my light and heater out of the way. I taped everything down that could get in the way.
Next, I used blue masking tape to mask the side panels. One strip of tape will do -- I was just making sure that I wouldn't have to deal with bleed over. I didn't bother masking the top or bottom rims, since A) they are also black and B) nobody will see them.
After this was done, I had to protect my fish and my wall by laying plastic over the top of the tank and taping it down, and then hanging some butcher paper on the wall behind the tank for the inevitable "whoops!" with the weenie roller.
Acrylic on glass is a slippery MFer, so be patient and apply several coats. Wait a good 20-30 minutes between coats, and you'll have fine results!
When moving all the equipment back to original positions, be suuuper careful, since the acrylic paint tends to scrape off rather easily in my experience.
This is what my water thing looks like.
