Ive read all the science of hydrostatic head pressures and flows and breathability but in real life, if it was clammy weather, they all felt clammy. if it was breezy dry weather, they all felt breezy dry. If i was working hard enough to get my heart rate up, they all started feeling clingy-steamy. Ive tried so many, and there seems to be two things that matter: Thicker denier fabrics are less clingy-clammy to a point, and mechanical ventilation is the only thing that gets the icky humid air your body creates out from between you and the shirt.

Patagonia Houdini is about as close as ive found to a good balance in COMFORT during actual aerobic activity in an actual windshirt but its neither the lightest at 4oz nor cheapest at $99

EE Copperfield is absolutely like wearing celophane next to your skin but so is Zpacks windshirt - any shirt made of material that thin feels like celophane on bare skin. The zpacks shirt though has baggier sleeves and a boxier body so, when worn over a thin long sleeve like Patagonia capilene lightweight long sleeve or OR Echo long sleeve, theres enough space between your body and the shirt to vent the clamminess out. In my humble experience, the idea of measurable Actual breathability is a myth

Having said that, if weight is the most important factor, Zpacks windshirt over an OR Echo or Capilene Lightweight longsleeve is a very effective kit.

But, dollar for dollar and ounce for ounce, the cheap Frogg Toggs Emergency rain jacket is thin and light and loose enough to be a very competitive wind shirt and its also waterproof if not the most durable thing. And yet, at 3.3oz and about $10 on Amazon theyre hard to pass up. Ive used the same one for going on three years including a TRT thruhike and its still waterproof.

by comparison, Patagonia Houdini which is not waterproof, weighs an ounce more than the FT and costs ten times as much at $99

whereas EE Coperfield which is also not waterproof, weighs 1oz less than the FT but still costs more than ten times as much at $110

and Zpacks (not waterproof) weighs 1.5oz less than the FT and costs $115

Even though i own all these windshirts, i still end up taking the FT for all my hikes if there is even a slight chance of rain
