Okay, for folks with a gadget obsession - these things can really help you understand your calorie expenditure: http://www.amazon.com/GoWear-Lifestyle-Calorie-Management-System/dp/B001HX36A0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1252989883&sr=8-1 (no, it's not an associate link or anything like that). If you've ever watched Biggest Loser - this is the same company that makes the armbands they use, but these are the cheaper versions.
It tells you how many calories you burn ~and~ how much sleep you get at night. I find the sleep information really interesting because I sleep sooo much less than I thought I did. I thought I was getting 8-9 hours of sleep and I really only get 5-6 hours... sometimes less :(
I've also seen them on eBay and on sale for even less at Amazon. There is a montly charge, but even using one for a month can give you a lot of valuable information then resell the unit. Some athletic clubs rent similar units for 3-7 days for you to get a baseline.
If you have no idea how many calories you burn in a day - it might be worth looking into one.
