hi bruce i used to have these headphones, and their sound quality is stupendous given their price; however they are uncomfortable and leak tons of sound.

u/bovine3dom · 5 pointsr/Vive

No.

You have two ears... therefore you only need two speakers. 7.1 means you get 8 cheap drivers rather than 2 good ones.

All 7.1 does is play different sounds through different parts of your ear, thus changing the sound before it gets to the actual 'hearing part' of the ear. This can be simulated very convincingly with software.

Personally, I'm going to use these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Grado-SR60e-Prestige-Backed-Headphone/dp/B00KYTNU9U/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1459163588&sr=1-2 . They're very light and sound great, but the bass is slightly lacking if you care about that sort of thing.

If the game dev does not implement proper headphone surround sound, I've found that Razer Surround works really well as a software solution.

If you need any more convincing that you don't need 7.1, just listen to this with a pair of stereo headphones: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUDTlvagjJA

Check out the Grado SR60e. If you don't like it or you don't think it's worth the price, just return it!

Edit: some discussion about the SR60e https://www.head-fi.org/threads/sr60-vs-sr80.299941/

Can't answer your question man, but im curious as well. I'm looking for a new pair and was wondering how the 558's compare to the sr60e in terms of sound. (http://www.amazon.com/Grado-SR60e-Headphones/dp/B00KYTNU9U)

Before the XPS 13, I used 15" laptops by themselves. This time around, I wanted to try something different: something small, lightweight, and with good battery life while I'm on the go, but with a desktop-like experience when I'm at my desk. That's why I chose to buy an XPS 13 9350 and a WD15 (Dell's USB-C Dock). By plugging in a single cable into my laptop's USB-C port (laptop to dock), I connect my laptop to a 25" 1440p monitor, a mechanical keyboard, a mouse, power (USB-C can provide up to 100 watts of power), headphones, a microphone, a backup SSD, and a micro USB cable (for phone, Xbox One controller for emulation, etc). I also have a highly adjustable office chair with great back support. Then when I want to take the laptop somewhere, I unplug that one single cable, put the laptop in a perfectly sized sleeve/bag hybrid, and go. It's a rather nice setup, especially now that Dell addressed my USB-C stability issues in a recent BIOS update (version 1.4.4 that came out a few days ago).

You make a good point about charging all the time being bad for the battery, but the dock /desktop mode is a core part of my setup and there's not a way to use the dock without it charging the laptop. I suppose I could start unplugging the laptop from the dock each night before I go to bed. That won't entirely fix the problem, but it should help some while still giving me the benefits of the dock.

I spent 2 months researching what to get for my entry into home recording. I ended up with the 2i2, but I wouldn't buy that bundle. No way you're getting worthwhile headphones or a mic with that little headroom in the total price after the 2i2's cost.

Here's what I used to start figuring out which mic to buy. After blind testing, I was tied between the Studio Projects LSM and the AKG Perception 220. After reading the notes by the reviewer, I decided to go with the flatter and better all-around recording mic, the 220. Whatever you choose, this article is a great place to get started. I can personally vouch for the quality of the 220, though. Here's a bit I recorded with the Perception 220 for someone wondering about the Martin DX1 over in /r/guitar earlier today. No EQ done to that, just a touch of compression.

As far as headphones go, if he's starting out, just toss in a pair of Grado SR-60e.

Ends up being in the $375 range, but you're wasting your time with the package components other than the 2i2, in my opinion, so you'll end up replacing them as soon as possible and the money you spent over and above the $149 scarlett 2i2 will have been thrown in the trash anyway - around $100 of wasted money. You can replace the mic with a Perception 120 and the Headphones with some Sony MDR-7502 headphones. You're not going to get the bass right with headphones anyway, so might as well just grab some of those and get the rest of the mix right. That setup would be closer to $325, but if you're going to be recording things for a long time, don't cut corners over $50 in my opinion.

I'd like to spend $50-$120. I want the best Pink Floyd experience my ears can encounter at this pricepoint. Undecided between open or closed (recommendations?)

Here's what I've encountered as good recommendations so far, I would like a few more opinions before I decide.

Headphones recommendations for the ultimate Dark Side Of The Moon experience (Vinyl)?
I haven't heard of Grado, but I see they are recommended often. I'm not very clear the difference between the SR60e and the SR80e (or other models).
I'm fine with getting something of high impedance, I'm just not clear what the benefits of a high impedance is.

What kind of music does she like? I got my girlfriend a Grado SR325e for her birthday, used in like new condition (with a set of the larger G-Cush pads) they are a pretty great price to performance for headphones you can drive optimally out of a cell phone.

The Grado SR60e is good, I'd recommend you get G-Cush pads as well for comfort.

The Sennheiser Momentum isn't bad and comes with a lot of color options since you want something feminine.

The Sennheiser HD598 is a great price to performance but isn't very portable, and is open back.

A little more information may lend more ideas though.

Budget - £40-£65ish

Source - Plugging them into my desktop computer and sometimes my Blue Yeti Microphone

Requirements for Isolation - Mostly using these at home, I've heard that open headphones have better audio quality, so I'm leaning towards that.

Preferred Type of Headphone - My current headphones fit over my ears, which I quite like.

Preferred tonal balance - Probably want a balanced set. I play games and listen to a variety of music. I really liked the way NiN sounds with my previous set of headphones.

Past headphones - My last headphones were SteelSeries Siberia V2. I never used the microphone, but was overall happy with the audio quality and comfort. Was unhappy that the left phone broke 2 months after warranty ended.

Preferred Music - NiN, The Decemberists, Bach, Some Arctic Monkeys, Some Gotye, Kavinsky, Big Data

Location - I'm from the UK, and I'm not sure about any price comparison sites.

Other Notes - Basically, I've checked out the recommended guides, and both the AKG K240 Studio (£72) and the Grado SR60e (£75) were slightly out of my range, and the lower end things were at the £20ish mark. I might stretch to those if you guys think it's worth it.

Also, I'm totally jealous of you Americans with your low audio equipment prices :P

I've been using Grado SR60's for years. They are open back, so some people don't like them.

Grado makes more expensive models, but I've never tried them.

u/ckchappell · 1 pointr/headphones

I second the Grados.

You could even start with the SR60e since they are $79 right now. I own the SR80s and like them a lot.

ATH-M30, the little brother to the legendary ATH-M50, is nice option.

Slightly more pricier is the Grado SR60i, it can have some comfortability issues over long sessions,
unless you 'mod' the cups a bit.

I haven't listened to them, but they are in an extremely competitive segment at the $80 price range.

I just don't see how they could be better than the Grado SR60e for $80 or a number of other products at the same price.

Just a good set of headphones for around $100 CAD on Amazon?

I've owned Grado SR-60s. They're open backed, so you can hear surroundings better, but others can hear them as well. They're not the most comfortable, though.

For something small and light, I've owned both the Koss PortaPros. I've also used the similar Sennheiser PX-100s, but the only ones I'm seeing on Amazon.ca are overpriced. Anyway, good sounding, light headphones for workouts, walks and the like.

I've never owned a pair of AKG K240s, but they've been ubiquitous in studios for a long time. Well, at least the last time I was in a studio; it's been a while. Other popular ones are various Sennheisers like the HD280s and Shure SRH440s, but I'm not seeing them at least on Amazon Prime in Canada. If you'd like to look, here they are at Sweetwater in US prices HD280s and SRH440s.

Hopefully there's something there you like.
