Is this going to be a dressy watch for formal/special occasions? Or are you looking for a daily wear watch?

If the former latter, then perhaps a hard-wearing quartz is a good idea. If you want something special, but that you'll have to take care of, then your budget could easily allow you a dressier mechanical watch (auto or hand wound).

Yes, I know I went kinda overboard on the Hamiltons, but I was working off the impression your watch example and fondness for divers gave me.

Just so you know, that Hamilton Pilot you linked to is actually a quartz. The automatic versions are considerably more expensive and more than your $500 budget (unless you can find a used one).

I think you're looking at the right brand though, for $500 it's hard to beat a Hammy. Here are a few I like in your budget:

Pretty sure that's the link I bought from. I wasn't overly concerned with the manufacturer warranty since the 2836-2 is such a common workhorse movement
