Is this going to be a dressy watch for formal/special occasions? Or are you looking for a daily wear watch?
If the
formerlatter, then perhaps a hard-wearing quartz is a good idea. If you want something special, but that you'll have to take care of, then your budget could easily allow you a dressier mechanical watch (auto or hand wound). In fact, fuck it, here's a list of shit I dug up. I love internet-window-shopping:
Young-looking Seiko automatic diver
Hamilton Khaki
Another (larger) Hamilton Khaki
Khaki Pilot (very diver/aviator-esque look)
A Tissot auto chrono
A fairly dressy Hamilton
A nice and clean sporty Tissot
A rather large but eye-catching Hamilton
Yes, I know I went kinda overboard on the Hamiltons, but I was working off the impression your watch example and fondness for divers gave me.
EDIT: got my former/latter mixed up. I blame Mr. Walker's magnificent amber restorative.
Looks like a Hamilton Khaki Pilot
Just so you know, that Hamilton Pilot you linked to is actually a quartz. The automatic versions are considerably more expensive and more than your $500 budget (unless you can find a used one).
I think you're looking at the right brand though, for $500 it's hard to beat a Hammy. Here are a few I like in your budget:
Edit: You should note that most of these watches (especially that first Jazzmaster I linked to) look much better in real life than they do on the Amazon photos. If you can, you may want to visit a Hammy AD so you can see these in person.
Edit 2: Here is a shitty cell phone pic of my Jazzmaster on my 6.5" wrist if that helps at all.
I'm looking for an automatic aviation watch. I want an uncluttered, easy to read at a glace, black or blue face.
This is what I would love to have but can't justify: https://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-H64715885-Automatic-Stainless-Croco-Embossed/dp/B0038YY902
I would totally buy this, but can't find it available anywhere: https://www.longislandwatch.com/Orient_ER2A004D_Aviator_Watch_p/er2a004d.htm
This is what I think I am going to settle for (obviously changing the band): https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNK807-Automatic-Stainless-Canvas/dp/B006CHML4I/
Am I missing anything in between?

Pretty sure that's the link I bought from. I wasn't overly concerned with the manufacturer warranty since the 2836-2 is such a common workhorse movement
semi like it, not the buttons on the band though. thanks for the link!
like this: http://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-H64715885-Khaki-Pilot-Watch/dp/B0038YY902/ref=sr_1_9?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1373765847&sr=1-9 or http://www.amazon.com/Glycine-Airman-Base-White-Strap/dp/B004DPFEO0/ref=sr_1_20?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1373765829&sr=1-20 would be awesome,
just don't like the price.
this is decent: http://www.amazon.com/Torgoen-Swiss-T16103-Aviation-Chronograph/dp/B002YK4R1W/ref=sr_1_31?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1373765829&sr=1-31 but do you know about the brand?
