If you're very out of shape, an interesting book to read is Heft on Wheels. Although what this guy did was to switch addictions from tobacco & alcohol to biking, his story of transformation was interesting to me.
And go for rides with groups - such as http://bikeportland.org/cats/ridesevents/
Read this when you need some inspiration. Us "larger" cyclists need heroes too.
I would counsel to make your exercise be playtime. Find what you enjoy for fun and let play elevate your metabolism.
My suggestion would be to get a bicycle and start using it for transportation. I had to ride a bicycle to school year round as a kid, and it developed a lifelong relationship with two wheeled travel. it's joy, not work.
I would also recommend getting a copy of Body for Life. Libraries have multiple copies, and you can get a used one for $4 on Amazon or other. Inspirational and instructional; I refer to it every couple of years to get my mojo back.
Also, read "Heft on Wheels" by Mike Magnuson, if you can find it. Great transformation success story and a fun read.
