This book was my everything as a child. My grandma and I would read it on the daily, as it was one of our "car books" I would read to her on the way to/from school. It' a ridiculously silly book about taking care of your monsters, with adorably goofy illustrations and a sweet message. It inspired me to be creative and is one of the reasons my grandma and I still read together today over the phone. :)

By any chance could it be this? How to Care for Your Monster.

This book was written in the 70s/80s and talks about how to take care of various monsters. I don't think it mentioned mermaids.
