I'm currently planning for my first (large) tank, a planted 29g. I have a few stocking and filtration questions.

My current livestock plan is:

  • 5x guppy

  • 5x platy

  • 4x dwarf cory

  • 1x dwarf gourami

  • 8x cardinal tetra

  • probably some snails and shrimp

Any immediate problems with this? AqAdvisor says my stocking level with this is 107%. My tap water pH comes out really high, around 9.4, but with my current small tank I've been diluting it with distilled water (3 tap:1 distilled) which brings it down to around 8.0. Will all these fish be okay with this pH? If not, what's the best option for bringing it down further?

I'd also love to hear any alternate fish suggestions anyone has. I'm kinda set on the guppies and platys (I've always loved looking at them in stores) but the gourami and cardinal tetras are really just there to fill in the gaps. I'm also a bit conflicted between otos and corys.

For filtration, I'm undecided between a HOB and a sponge filter. My ideas were the Aqueon QuietFlow 50, the Aqueon QuietFlow 30 + a small sponge filter, or something like this 55g sponge filter. As far as I can see, any of these options would provide adequate filtration. If I used one of the options with a sponge filter, would I still need a bubbler, or would the filter provide enough agitation for oxygenation?
