Chapters 85 through 88 in I am I by Sri Saraswathi Ma are a beautiful Illumination of this.

> I like your response but this idea, that the severely mentally ill are not aware they are mentally ill is a bit presumptuous.

That's a very good point. I wrote it to point out that an awareness of their own mental state is likely a good thing, but that's not how it came across. I edited the original post, thanks for pointing that out.

> Further, what is mental illness? Could it be they are just as sane as anyone, with a different physical brain which interprets data using a different approach? This sounds a lot like evolution to me. Nature tries various things through random mutation of genes and those things that work well, survive.

I also very much agree with this. There have been times over the past few years where I was pretty positive i'd 'lost it', and even though i'm pretty well integrated into society, I think if most folks were to peak inside my experience for a bit they'd try to haul me off to the loony bin.

I do, however, think that there is a certain type of turmoil and suffering that can go along with mental illness and that turmoil can be addressed to make the experience more overwhelming.

Also (side note) if you've never heard of Saraswathi Ma, I have the impression you might enjoy one of her books
