It's helpful to take a small stash of OTC medicine, even if you don't need it in the end. I have a small container like this, and pack it with aspirin, allergy meds, melatonin, diarrhea meds, Dramamine, and some band-aids.

Obviously if you're traveling overseas, you'll want to be careful about taking unlabeled pills with you, but I've never had a problem within the US.
