I'm in no position to declare anything as rock solid, but I own a ineo USB to SATA Dual-Bay Docking Station and I can say it works. I've never used the clone function, but it is nice to plug a drive in and use it like an external drive.
There are usb hard drive docks that take from 2.5" to another 2.5" with a clone function. Example: https://www.amazon.com/ineo-Dual-Bay-Offline-Duplicate-T3527-VIII/dp/B073W4YDFQ/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=hard+drive+cloner&qid=1564970568&s=gateway&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1
I really dont recommend it:
One if there is a problem with pulling data off the hard drive then the problem could travel over to the other SSD.
Two the goal was to do a clean install to prevent such carrying the problem forward issues.
Three the 2 hard drives have to roughly match the same size. You cannot downsize a cloned image. If you have purchased a smaller SSD then what your hard drive image is then its a failed image. Cloning is a 1 to 1 copy of the data inside your hard drive.
