Totally! That's also totally viable ;)

I bought two of these $15 maple necks on Amazon (which are now $33) and a StewMac fret file (the medium one) and practiced. After two necks, I had it down, and now it comes pretty easy. Basically, just go slow and always under-file. Fret leveling is also important, but most $200+ guitars will have level frets.
