Wow, does this mean that we have a fully open-source laptop option that isnt really old? The stats on this for example seem pretty decent.

Personally I'm not in the camp but there are indeed quite a few people that hold MBP as the pinnacle of build quality. I can't fault the quality itself though I'm not a fan of the design and feel personally. I've had three MBP's over the last 8 years or so for work purposes. The middle one I had was the longest at about 4+ years (by then it was time to upgrade due to the hardware alone, CPU & RAM). I never had a single dent in any one of them at all. Some aluminum bodies do indeed dent. That includes lugging it on an hour (each way) train ride + walk to downtown SF for a good period of time etc. I have indeed had aluminum laptops that dent, but not my MBP.

Further I think you are misunderstanding the materials in many of the laptops your list. The MBP is in fact machined aluminum (as is Razer). Often at a higher quality than super thin aluminum panels on some laptops (not all).

With that said the gx701 is primarily magnesium alloy (like the surface) with a brushed aluminum lid (which gives it the distinct look).

The Thinkpad Carbon? Well those panels you boast are actually magnesium

>However, carbon fiber does have some distinct disadvantages over more conventional laptop materials. Because it is a composite of the carbon weave and more fragile polymer, its finish isn’t anywhere near as durable as the woven interior—it’s much more susceptible to visible scratches and dents. The components beneath might be nearly as safe as they are underneath metal, but a corner drop or piercing impact will still look pretty bad. Carbon fiber is also much more expensive to produce than even magnesium alloy.

So it's mostly in that case just for some inner frame pieces because apparently carbon fiber in this application is actually more like to dent and scratch than magnesium.

That's why the gx701 panels will feel quite similar to the Lenovo, since it's the same basic material.u actualy

Again I'm curious what you actually found lacking in the gx701's build quality in use?
