The GS60 is meant to be an ultrabook-esque laptop, with only 4.4 pounds and 0.8" thick, and it has a much better IPS screen compared to the Lenovo Y50's. The Y50 is also around a pound heavier and 0.95" thick. If you opt for the GS60, it really makes sense to get the GTX 870M GPU version, the Ghost Pro-052, since the 870M is around 30 percent better than the GTX 860M, but the Ghost Pro is not too much more expensive than the regular Ghost.

If you're on a strict budget, then this version Y50 would be a good bet. If your budget has some flexibility, then the GS60 Ghost Pro is the way to go.

Maybe this, I don't know, I get tired of looking. I just need it to run fast. I do a lot of real-time video work with our international clients where I'm sharing out my desktop and working live with a bunch of programs running.

Those switchable graphics issues sound odd. However, every laptop you see now will have switchable graphics. It's a native to the Haswell processors. Disabling this would drastically reduce your battery life.

If I were you, I would get this Y50 and get a Samsung 840 Evo and put it in yourself. It's a really easy upgrade to do, and it would save you a lot of money.

?

That's the going price I've seen everywhere for the i7 1080p model

For #1, lots of gaming laptops are bulky. I compared most of them and bought a Lenovo y50, specs are as solid, and it's thinner, lighter, runs cooler, and is more quiet than any in the category. It still not as small as some, but I had no trouble taking it to every class in my backpack.

http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-15-6-Inch-Gaming-Laptop-59425944/dp/B00K6ZIMPE/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1421341497&sr=1-2&keywords=lenovo+y50

It runs solidworks very well, never had an issue. I will be using it for MATLAB this semester and I have no worries it'll handle it.

On the flipside my CAD professor had one of the super thin 14" Lenovo Yogas, and I never saw it stumble when he taught from it in class. Pretty much anything with a decent processor/memory will be fine. One with a dedicated card will be worth it for CAD, but the others with integrated graphics should be livable as well.

Bottom line, get something that fits your size needs with a somewhat current and competent processor, make sure that it'll still be useful in 4 or 5 years for senior projects and such. I benefit greatly from a cheapo 22" LCD that I load up an ebook on, 2 screens help and makes the screen size requirement less relevant.

I would suggest not buying directly from Lenovo because their shipping times are pretty long.

Amazon's Y50

I own a Lenovo Y50 Touch UHD, it was a bit more than your budget, but there are cheaper options, like this one on amazon. There is a touchscreen option and a 4k UHD display option both in your pricerange.

You can also buy direct from Lenovo, they have a good reputation.

I feel like I say this alot, but I'd say either the Lenevo Y50 or the Acer Nitro V15 sound like the best options for you

u/Wet_Celery · 1 pointr/Games

Reddit, I could use your help! How well will this laptop run the game?

u/Orangematz · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Nah. This is good as it gets for about $1000. Only thing I'd be concerned about is the bad screen quality, if you're okay with that.

u/fourdots · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Lenovo usually has better prices than the various retailers; part of that is probably related to their supply chain (which in turn is related to the issues they have with shipping speeds).

There's a $979 model on Amazon right now which is pretty much the same as the $949 models Lenovo is selling directly, albeit with an i7-4700HQ instead of an i7-4710HQ. The newer 4710HQ has a small clock bump, but is otherwise identical. You wouldn't notice any real difference, and the slightly higher price is probably worth the guarantee of fast shipping.

(I should clarify that "sometimes taking months" is very much a worst-case scenario. I've seen a few complaints about that, but overall 2-3 weeks seems to be more normal for Lenovo).

This laptop is a better deal than the Lenovo Y50 on Tiger Direct, right?
http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-15-6-Inch-Gaming-Laptop-59425944/dp/B00K6ZIMPE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1417165718&sr=8-2&keywords=lenovo+y50#productDetails

Seems to be the same, except with a SSD slot. For a $40 difference, that seems pretty good. Am I missing anything important?

EDIT: This ASUS ROG seems even better for a slightly bigger boost in price.

Any opinions? Thanks!

u/Citizen_KK · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Piggybacking off of this comment, since it seems to be the same sort of thing I'm looking for:

How does the ASUS compare to this Y50? http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K6ZIMPE/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1QP5D4IK0YGRD&coliid=I274QBIYAU4P83#productDetails

From what I've read about the Y50, its major issue is the screen, but this one is an IPS, which should be a better display than a TN, right? Is there a major difference between a 7200 RPM HD with no SSD and a 5400 one with an 8 Gig SSD for gaming?

Thanks so much in advance!

u/SweetKeithTV · 1 pointr/Twitch

If you can spare 90 bucks, go with this one: http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-15-6-Inch-Gaming-Laptop-59425944/dp/B00K6ZIMPE/ref=psdc1_t1_B00K6ZIO2K_B00K6ZIMPE

But honestly, like a few have suggested, it's easier to stream on a desktop. But if you're not planning on streaming the latest and greatest then you're fine.

On the lower end of you budget you will find laptops like the Asus N551JK-MH71:

  • 15.6 inch, 1920x1080p IPS display
  • Intel i7-4710HQ + 16 GB of RAM
  • 750 GB HDD (7200 rpm)
  • Nvidia GTX 850M with 2 GB of GDDR3 RAM
  • Price: $999

Wonderful IPS display, i7 quad core and enough RAM and storage. The GTX 850M isn't the best GPU, but powerful enough to run WoW, GW 2 or similar games at high settings.

For a little bit more you can get a laptop with a GTX 860M, e.g. the Lenovo Y50 or the Asus GL551JM. The Y50 doesn't have an optical drive (maybe you could live with an external one) and both laptops have only a TN panel, but the GTX 860M is a step up to the GTX 850M. Both have also an i7 quad core and at least 8 GB of RAM.

And since Nvidia released new GPU (970M and 980M) you can find laptops with "older" GPUs on sale, MSI GT Series GT70 Dominator-895:

  • 17.3 inch, 1920x1080p display
  • Intel i7-4800MQ + 8 GB of RAM
  • 1 TB HDD
  • Nvidia GTX 870M with 3 GB of GDDR5 RAM
  • Price: $1199

    A decent deal for a 17.3 inch laptop with a GTX 870M.

If you want a new Nvidia GTX 970M GPU, you will have to blow your whole budget. But it would be probably worth it. Nvidia made huge improvements and a 970M outperforms even a 880M by quite a bit. Here are some decent models with such a GPU:

  • ASUS ROG G751 Series G751JT-CH71
  • MSI GT60 Dominator-1065
  • MSI GT70 Dominator-2293

The mac pro doesn't have a 2560x1600 display... it's 1280x800. the 1100 model comes with 4 gigs, and a 2.5 ghz haswell i5, and a 500gb HDD.

[Lenovo y50] (http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-15-6-Inch-Gaming-Laptop-59425944/dp/B00K6ZIMPE/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1413507989&sr=1-1&keywords=lenovo+y50) This also comes with a dedicated graphics card and an ips display, not that led backlit bullshit apple has.

That is not the current gen MBP. This is. The bar is set at $2,374.99.

> http://www.amazon.com/HP-Envy-i7-4510U-Notebook-Computer/dp/B00HCQ1S56 (this one actually has a better graphics card, slighty better cpu and bigger hdd)

The graphics card is marginally better, only has 1 video out, and is driving a lower resolution panel than the one in the Mac.

The CPU is only dual core (compared to a quad core in the rMBP), so it's actually less than half as good. I say less than half because it also has a smaller cache and lower clock rate.

The bigger HDD is a 1TB 5400 rpm drive, compared to a 512GB SSD with 5-10x the read/write speeds in the mac. It's over a full pound heavier (5.6 lbs to 4.46 lbs)

> http://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-inspiron-17-3-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i7-8gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive-silver/9463471.p?id=1219418153701&skuId=9463471&ref=06&loc=01&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=9463471&extensionType=pla:g&s_kwcid=PTC!pla!!!66713926186!g!!52698021559&kpid=9463471&k_clickid=0e8ba800-2897-ab88-239d-000069bd5b96&kpid=9463471&lsft=ref:212,loc:1&ksid=0e8ba800-2897-ab88-239d-000069bd5b96&ksprof_id=8&ksaffcode=47&ksdevice=c

First of all, it's more than 3 lbs heavier. Why? Uh, that's a 17" laptop. Despite the larger screen, it's still only 1080p. The CPU is the same dual core i7-4510U, which is still half as good as the one in the MBP. It also has a crappy 5400 rpm HDD.

Interesting: A decent (still inferior) cpu, the same GPU, a mix of spinning disk and SSD, and a good GPU. Still only a 1080p screen, and half the ram though.

Half the ram, spinning 1TB HDD with 8GB of SSD (a cache, basically), another 1080p screen, and only one video output.

Worse GPU, the same crappy dual core CPU as the HP and the Dell, half the RAM of the rMBP, 5400 RPM HDD, the same 1080p lower resolution screen. But hey, at least it has 7 hours of battery! That's only two full hours less than the rMBP, with half the CPU power, half the ram, a much slower disk, a crappier screen, and a worse GPU. Oh, and out of all of the laptops it has the longest battery life. The others were in the 4-5 hour range, max.

Pffftttch! You're not actually serious are you? Come on, you're trolling me now. This fucking thing weights nearly TWICE what my rMBP does! 8.4 lbs?! And STILL only a 1080p screen? Oh, and guess what: 3 hours of battery life if you want to do anything but look at a blank screen. Ok, I will admit the GPU is insane: It has just as many outputs as the rMPB and way more power. But wait, what he hell? The CPU is still not as powerful as the one in the rMPB? But this foldable desktop machine costs more than a rMBP?

tl:dr; All of the laptops you listed cheap out on battery, CPU performance, RAM, disk performance, weight, or some combination of the 5.

u/halfmasta · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I'm almost in the exact same position as you are, looking for a similar laptop in the same price range. The Lenovo Y50 seems to be pretty good, but I am new here too so take what I say with a grain of salt. The Y50 is the one I will probably buy.

One potential problem is battery life- only about 3-4 hours of heavy use. I will definitely be watching this thread to see what is recommended.

u/Snowpocalypse149 · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Like most posts on here in your price range for gaming I would recommend the Lenovo Y50.

http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-15-6-Inch-Laptop-59425944-Black/dp/B00K6ZIMPE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1404753556&sr=8-1&keywords=lenovo+y50

It's a little higher then your price range but its got great value for the price and will run the games you mentioned above.

u/0FrankTheTank7 · -2 pointsr/hardwareswap

ya id rather spend an extra 100$ sometimes less on a lenovo y50, 1080p screen, 15.6in, gtx 860m. your asking price is way to high for last gen note book.

700$ would be good and no additional addons cause youre just forcing those extras and making people pay for them when 90% of people wont want them.
