Just make sure you follow the installation instructions for your specific version. There were 8 major and a few minor versions of the router, many of which changed the hardware significantly (to the point that it was barely the same router). And that's not counting the alternately numbered versions like the -54GL, -54G2, or -54GS, and more, which all also had alternate versions. Here's the page with all of the supported routers, find your specific version of your router and follow the instructions there (note the link on the right hand side to the instruction page).
Don't get scared by warnings, while bricking it is possible, it's unlikely, and they give warnings mostly to cause you to proceed with caution, not to stop you from trying. Besides, if you fail, you only killed a WRT54G, it's a $30 router at this point (or less used).

This is possible, but there are a lot of variables that will control how difficult it will be. I've done this twice before, once at Rockland West, which uses Pavlov, and once at a place outside of Lawrence using babtel.
Whatever the set up is, a modem is not going to help you unless you plan on going through a different internet service provider.
Look for a router that has a RJ-45 port (AKA Ethernet port) for your WAN (uplink) connection. A cheap example is this guy.

Who the internet service provider is
If you're sure the Ethernet port works. Have you plugged in a laptop/desktop computer and confirmed it has connection to the internet?

after you buy the equipment, you can install yourself (given that your address has been serviced before), they try to make you get the kit in the mail, but you can just go pick it up (just call them after you have placed order and tell them you want to pick up the kit. ithas a couple coax cables and a splitter) total cost after shipping is roughly 30 bucks, the install is free, but that's 3 months worth of rentals for equipment you now own.

Yes, just some basic traffic shaping. I inherited a network from someone else and they're using a consumer linksys router which seems crazy as this is a moderately sized hotel. Which router would you recommend?
How old is your router, I had a 5 year old linksys router that would not let me run any servers after portfowarding, so i just bought a new router.
