It was a little more than just embellishing or exaggerating, it was straight-up making up whole facts when he lied about his war experiences and about playing professional baseball. In my opinion, he was a liar who coldly manipulated the believing member's feelings. Sure he was probably pretty friendly in person, but I'm sure Joseph Smith was charming in person to! That's what makes a con man successful! In my opinion, PHD was one of the absolute worst modern church leaders because he knew that he was lying in his speeches, (unlike probably most Church leaders who probably believe it all).
If you haven't read it yet, I highly recommend Lynn Packer's book about him. Very eye opening!
