You kinda of need to be opportunistic. When I've made custom toys I've "borrowed" parts from other toys, model kits, etc. Hitting up the local Dollar Store (if you have one) can be helpful in this regard, especially for Transformers customs as they have a lot of cheap toy cars, planes and tanks you can cut apart. A dremel, Xacto saw, skill saw, files, emery boards, etc. are the tools you'd use to hack up "donor toys" and shape parts to fit into your custom.

I buy my paints at Michaels craft store. The brand I use the most is Testors acrylic model enamels. They come in a huge range of colors, can be thinned with water or their own brand thinner and are relatively durable with good adhesion to plastics.

Joints can harvested from other toys, purchased or made yourself. If you are looking to buy them, look for doll crafting parts as there are man sources for premade ball joints (and others) in various sizes that are fairly inexpensive.

There are also tutorials only that can teach you how to make them. I've made some using plastic dowels, beads and superglue but there are other techniques out there. Polymer clay (sculpy/femo) or epoxy clay (like Magic Sculp) can be used to make the "socket."

Magic Sculp is an amazing material, and even though it is pricey it is well worth the money. It is a two-part epoxy resin clay that air-hardens to a stone-like strength. If it is kept wet (with a damp cloth/towel) it can me molded and worked for days, but if allowed to dry will harden in 24 hours without baking or shrinking. It can be sanded, painted, drilled, cut with a saw, etc. It can be used in a mold to make copies of any part a mold can be made for. It will hold incredibly fine detail. I've use it to make new small parts, or to blend the transition between parts I've pulled from other toys.

LED lights and lighting kits can be had off eBay or Amazon. Depending on what you are looking for you could also pull apart Dollar Store LED flashlights and such, or find cheap toys with lighting built into them that you can rip out and transplant. I'd tell you to check out Radio Shack, but sadly Radio Shack no longer exists. When it did it was a great place to buy electronic bits for projects since you could handle the parts before you purchased.

I have here some "Magic-Sculpt" 2-part expoy putty. Each of the two parts is in 2.5 pound containers. This looks like the item though I've had it a while and I don't know how much I paid.
