Something like this will last you forever: http://www.amazon.com/Maple-End-Grain-Chopping-Block/dp/B00O4CQIL0

I have an end-grain maple board that has seen daily use since the late 90's. It'll outlive me.

Just cut only things you can eat raw on it. Wipe it off with a damp paper towel after you're done. Then once a week, wipe it down with plain vinegar, wipe it off. Once every couple months, rub in some mineral oil. All there is to it.

I use poly boards for meat. They go in the dishwasher and get replaced every so often. If they slip, put a couple wet paper towels under them.

Catskill Craftsmen seems to offer a good price/quality combination end-grain board. I have this model myself and have been pleased with it: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000OUXBMK (bought mine through sears w/some bonus points, ended up being under $30 out of pocket).

Another end-grain option: https://www.amazon.com/Maple-End-Grain-Chopping-Block/dp/B00O4CQIL0 I have a small cheese-sized board from these folks and it's still going strong after 8-9 years.
