thanks for asking! That's the Marshall Stanmore in Black - I think it's always been $400 retail price.

So we got those 50% as an Apple Retail employee one year for Holiday Season and everyone got one, I’m super glad I did too.

One coworker says it’s great for her tv output, sound bar replacement - I think that’s a good idea and the quality is way but not for my workflow.

here's what I would say overall:

- sound quality is super great, been using this for years . I even bring it to the skatepark sometimes, and make sure to set it on something out of harms way

- build quality is also great, literally 0 things have had issues, AND it once got hit by a skateboard hard on the right edge. Just has a very minor dent, smaller than a dime
- it "remembers" the Apple TV I use via bluetooth, which is a gift and a curse. Sometimes I have to "forget this device" if I use the Apple TV in a different room because it connects so quickly
- I really wish the physical knobs for Bass, Treble, and Volume, were software controlled instead. Not a big deal, just means I can't set it across the room away from reach.
- And lastly, I love that it allows optical input, but (as intended) I cant control the volume for optical without the physical volume knob. I know there's a solution for this but honestly I don't know where to begin finding one

Absolutely! Great advice here, and truly you should check something out in person first if given the opportunity. I haven't owned any of the products that have been listed here, so aside from my knowledge of others doing reviews, I don't have anything else to bring to the discussion. I've been doing research to make a new purchase and the UE Boom is likely my first pick unless I spring for the Marshall Stanmore or Wren V5BT as a more permanent device (non-portable).

The Verge is generally spot on when it comes to reviews and I've come to trust them. One of the big problems with single authors is that they don't have access to test all products out there and suffer from purchase envy/blindness if they have spent money on something.

Both have their weaknesses. Educate yourself from multiple sources and ultimately try to test them out before making a purchase.

I've connected my Marshall Stanmore to my AT LP-1240 using the TT's internal phono pre-amp and it works like a charm.

I can switch it easily from my TT to Bluetooth and the sound is pretty great, IMO.
