Does it have a glass carafe? It should. If it doesn't it's a good idea to buy a replacement (Krups makes them, and they're not hard to find). The carafe has lines on it to show you how much water to put in depending on how many shots you're making and whether or not you're going to steam any milk. If you can figure out the model number, Krups also has manuals available on their website.

I started off with this type of machine, and while it won't produce the quality of espresso you can get in a coffee shop, you can make some very nice espresso drinks with it. Whether or not you'll want to drink straight espresso from this machine depends entirely on your own taste. If you like it, then it's good espresso. This type of machine is a great option if you just want to make things like lattes and cappuccinos on a budget, because they're often better at steaming milk than lower end "real" espresso machines.
