Obtain a barebones HP Z800 and transfer your CPUs, RAM, and storage devices to it. It has four internal 3.5" drive bays, so in order to install the other four, you'd need to use something like this in the 5.25" bays.

Like the r710's that have the PERC6/i, the onboard LSI controller is limited to 2TB drives, but it'd seem in your case that won't be an issue. :)

The link works if you format the https:// correctly - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KZF9JF7/ref=psdc_160354011_t1_B00DGZ42SM

I got one of these and stuck in the front bays. If I removed my bluray burner and my front USB 3.0 hub I could probably fit another one in. It might have to be dremeled a bit but I think I could make it work.

I'm using a case similar to this although not as deep and missing the fans behind the hard drives, the RSV-4000. I stripped out the front bays which leaves you with 5.25" drive bays essentially. I used 1 of these here and two of these here to fill the void and provide the backplane. the NH-U9 also fit well for me but I did buy the 140mm version without checking and that didn't fit, not even close.

Overall it's a decent platform for DIY. I think you get tremendous value at this price point.

Where are you at? In the US you can get 6TB drives for $130 set up as an external drive.

What you're maybe looking for is a DAS. A discussion of the DAS versus other storage options can be found here:

Perhaps not a cheap as you like, but you could look in this direction:

While it's hardly a plug and play solution like a QNAP or Synology, you can make a rudimentary NAS with a $35 Raspberry Pi.
