They seem pretty unimpressed with them over in /r/gmrs, which is a shame because they're pretty attractive looking radios on paper, especially the MXT400.

I was testing UV-5R range this weekend with one having an upgraded antenna and the other hooked to a mag mount on my truck. The range we got was maybe a mile. I think the moment you bring a handheld antenna in to the mix you really hurt range. There is a more powerful option with GMRS. GMRS you have to get a $75 license from the FCC, but you don't have to pass a test and the license would cover your wife as well and lasts 10 years. This would get you a 40W mobile for $200. This is the $500 solution and not sure you can mount a mobile on a bike, but I'll throw this one in the mix.
