/r/SuggestALaptop would probably be a better place to ask.

I wasn't able to find anything on the t4254H variant only the DB71.

It seems to be selling for $1700, and while it has a huge amount of power, it's also big and bulky and has a less than stellar battery life (of course most gaming notebooks have sub 4 hours battery lives). At that same price, you could look at at the MSI gs60 stealth pro. It has a 15.6 inch screen, is a tiny .79 inches thick, and has a better GPU (the 870m, which is a decent update to the 770m in the DB71). Like the Asus, it also has 2 hdd slots and comes with a 128gb SDD and a 1TB HDD. It's battery life and portability allows it to be used as a normal notebook, as well as a gaming notebook when the need arises.

If you don't really care about the form factor in the gs60, similar laptops can be found for a lower price. On amazon I was able to find this gt70 dominator, which is a very similar laptop but only $1400. Even cheaper and possibly better laptops could be found from online boutiques like Xotic PC or Origin PC. a Clevo or Sager would probably be your best bet, but there are plenty of other ASUS, MSI and Gateway offerings as well.

If you xpost it to /r/suggestalaptop you'll probably get a better response than this. Likewise, posting the price and specs of the laptop you have in mind would be useful as well.

Finally, how portable do you need your gaming laptop to be? You could easily build a desktop for $600-700 that's a lot faster than this. With the renaming money you could buy an ultrabook that's much more portable.

The MSI GT70 Dominator would be nice for ya if you don't mind the large size.

u/construktz · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

The most power within your price range would be the MSI GT70 Dominator with a GTX 870M for $1200, but it's a 17.3" laptop.

If you want 15", I would personally go for the ASUS ROG GL551JM.

Its really high quality, has a 256GB SSD, 1080p display, Nvidia GTX 860M graphics, and a powerful i7-4710HQ. I'm a big fan of the ASUS ROG laptops.

u/RAWRRAWZ · 2 pointsr/gaming

I assume the laptop that /u/Dman5156 got is this GT70 Dominator

This is quite a powerful machine for its price. But it is quite heavy and bulky which makes portability an issue if you wanted that quality as well.

Judging from NoteBookCheck:

Civilization: Beyond Earth

High 1920x1080: 51.4 fps

Ultra 1920x1080: 45.1 fps

This should run WarThunder and Forest on Ultra at around the same FPS if not higher I believe.

Arma III would probably run ultra at 30 fps so you might want to lower graphics to get a better framerate.

Other decent budget laptops:

Lenovo Y50 $900~$1000

This main difference in gaming would be the difference in graphics card. the GTX860M vs GTX870M. If you run your games on medium~high, it should run with no problems.

Lenovo Y40 $680~$800

This is a bit of a stretch. If you lower the resolution, you can run the games at high for about 40fps.

One thing I'd like to say is that the harddrives on these laptops are pretty slow at 5400rpm. I'm not too sure about the speed when it is hybrid with 8gb SSD but it depends on how often you use the same programs. You can dish out an extra $100 to get a proper 7200rpm harddrive for laptops

I recently read an article that seems to match exactly what you're looking for.

"As the only notebook to currently ship with a GTX 870M for under $1250, the MSI GT70 Dominator gets our highest performance "mainstream" gaming notebook recommendation. There are certainly areas of compromise – the pure HDD storage, cooling system, styling, and TN panel are all less than I'd like – but if you want to game on a notebook it's best to start with the fastest GPU you can afford. The other items like storage can be upgraded later, but there's not a significant market for notebook GPU upgrades. For $1200, you get a rather potent Core i7-4800MQ processor, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, and a decent 1920x1080 anti-glare TN panel. It's not perfect, but it's the best we can do at this price.

If you're willing to spend $50 more there are two alternatives that also pack a GTX 870M. One is the MSI GT60 Dominator, which is the 15.6" version of the GT70 with mostly the same components (but with 12GB RAM). The other is the Clevo P157SM, another 15.6" notebook with a 1080p matte TN panel. The Clevo looks better in some areas and generally offers superior cooling in my experience, but the touchpad is pretty awful and the tramp stamp doesn't help matters. The CPU is also a slightly slower i7-4710MQ and it comes with a 750GB HDD. Basically, we're giving up SSD storage to keep the price under $1300 while getting the fastest GPU possible."

From the sidebar: "Clevo is a Taiwanese manufacturer who produces barebones notebook chassis which are then filled and sold by a variety of other OEM.".

NotebookReview Mr_Mysterious Clevo Guide A bit outdated but still contains some useful information, like: "A little known fact is that Alienware used to be a Clevo reseller until they became so profitable that they were bought out by Dell."

Clevo laptops are very upgradeable, CPUs generally being socketed (not soldered) and GPUs being a relatively easy upgrade. I've seen forum posts about XOTICPC selling standalone GPUs for Clevos if you contact them directly.

That being said, I would suggest the Sager NP8651 (Clevo P650SE), based on its awesome 970m and coming in at: "REGULAR PRICE: $1394.00 / CASH DISCOUNTED PRICE: $1352.18" under your "$1500 if needed" price point.

Configuration changes:

FREE! - IC Diamond Thermal Compound
15.6" FHD (16:9) Anti-Glare Matte-Type Sager IPS Screen (1920x1080) (LG Brand) (SKU - S2K003)
8GB DDR3 1600MHz [2x4GB] Dual Channel Memory (SKU - RAM01S)
1TB 5400RPM (w/ 8GB SSD Memory) Seagate Hybrid 64MB Cache [SATA III - 6GB/s] (SKU - HDD092)

870M vs 970M Benchmark (source) Not a lot of Dragon Age: Inquisition benchmarks out there yet, so I used Battlefield 4 since it also uses the Frostbite 3 engine.

Have you considered a power strip?

MSI GE60 bad battery life though, you won't find any laptop able to game for more than 1~2 hours no matter what, because a high quality graphics card is a battery guzzling hound.

(ROG G750)[http://www.amazon.com/G750JS-DS71-17-3-inch-Gaming-GeForce-Graphics/dp/B00IEV85OU/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1406412829&sr=8-6&keywords=870M] I believe this one has slightly better battery life, however it will not matter if you're using the battery for gaming.

Both the above laptops carry a 870M, you can probably get an 880M below 2k, but the performance boost might not be worth the $400 extra.

u/Orangematz · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

What games do you plan to play? For a little bit more you can go for this which has an 870M and 4800MQ.

u/Battlebite · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Would it be worth it dishing out the extra $300 for the MSI Dominator for the better GPU and larger screen?

u/caermordrin · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Are you guys doing the copper cooling upgrade? I am wondering if it is worth it. Be trying to decide between doing a Sager or getting -

OK here are the computers that are on my watch list, these have had sales in excess of 500$ off in the past if i remember correctly. and again, you can ship these to the UK for a little extra cash. I personally am looking for a 17.3 inch screen, but if you want a smaller screen (cheaper probably) tell me and ill do the research for you. The Asus is what you should be looking to buy, and if you are willing you can buy these laptops refurbished for super cheap (1000 bucks). These are the absolute best i could find after all my research, anyways, here they are: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IAACWH6/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1752VPBNI9TIU&coliid=I37JW8F0B1DLPR&psc=1

BTW let me know if you liked them and my work payed off! XD. and I know these prices are a bit premium, but they are the best mix of quality and price i could possibly find. and last note, the only problem with Asus is their absolutely terrible customer service, and whenever you buy a gaming laptop (whatever the brand) you run the risk of dysfunctional models (read reviews for yourself and decide for yourself if the computer is a safe buy)

u/mazdarati2 · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I think THIS is what you need. I chose this over the equivalent ASUS laptops because those have 5400rpm HDDs and this has a 7200rpm. Also, MSI uses very nice Steelseries keyboards.

u/550bomb · 1 pointr/headphones

I just purchased a pair of HD 600's and I have not bought an amp/dac to go with them. I was hoping to be able to run them just out of my laptop but I don't know if it's even possible. Here is a link to my laptop https://www.amazon.com/MSI-GT70-Dominator-895-9S7-1763A2-895-17-3-Inch/dp/B00IMTQ6I6. If you recommend just biting the bullet and buying one now let me know some recommendations that won't kill the bank. I don't plan on taking them outside my home either if that helps. Thanks in advance!

These are some laptops that you can expect good performance on D3 out of, OP.

  1. Asus ROG. This is probably my least favorite, but it is still a very nice laptop.
  2. MSI Dominator. This is, by far, the choice I would go with. Excluding the Razer Blade (which retails at ~2k USD) this is my favorite in the list.
  3. That said, however..I'd be wrong not to include the Razer Blade 14. This one is at the peak of your budget, but it was recently reviewed by LinusTechTips to be by and large one of the best gaming laptops available to date.
u/vanquish_4chan · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Would recommend this for $1400 instead: has a better GPU (870m) for $ 600 less. Even after adding an ssd or more ram you'll save hundreds and get quite a significantly more powerful GPU. /u/nukeclears can confirm

u/Shakeandflex · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Hey,
I posted my own thread of this but thought this might be more appropriately posted here as I think threads should be more focused on "discussion" than one word/link answers. Anyways, I'm looking to upgrade.

I've had https://www.amazon.com/MSI-GT70-Dominator-895-9S7-1763A2-895-17-3-Inch/dp/B00IMTQ6I6 for the past year and a half and while it's been great, I bought it on a budget. I'm having issues with heat and only being able to run brand new games at around medium settings. My performance is good, but I'd like to at least be able to run simpler games like WoW on fully maxed out settings.
Before anyone suggests a desktop, I'm still living at home for at least another year and have no place for a desktop - I share my room and most of my gaming is done late at night as I work all day, and thus cannot be in my room due to being on skype, listening to music, etc.
Therefore, my only option is a laptop. I usually move it once or twice a day, as me having the "portable" device I'm the one that ends up having to leave the room if I want to be alone.
What does /r/masterrace suggest? I figured the primary thing I should look for is a good processor and maybe at least a 970M, as I can solve the cooling with one of those cooling stations. A secondary but important thing is screen size; After having used the 17'3, I don't know if I could go back down to 15'6. In fact, if possible I'd like a bigger screen.
Budget would ideally be under $1500 CAD, but willing to go up to 2k for something a bit more future proof.

Since you own an MSI GS70 I was wondering if you could answer a few questions for me, as I know nothing about gaming laptops, but plan on getting one soon. I've been looking at this MSI GT60 Dominator a bit and I don't really know how good it is based off the fact it has one amazon review. How much better is the MSI GT70 Dominator? I'm so confused on what laptop I should get for good gaming performance.

u/gryphonlord · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Is this similar or better? It's costlier, but there's a massive discount right now, so I'd like to know

u/PceLuvnSloMo · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

The MSI Dominator has the best card around the price range, and if you are willing to spend an extra $50, you can get the Dragon Edition which IMO looks amazing.
