Not to be an ass, but I had a bit of a giggle that you asked if anyone has any experience with Graves Disease in a subreddit for Graves Disease...lol.

Anyway, There is nothing anyone could have done to prevent getting Graves Disease. It's generally seen as hereditary, or linked to genes.

If you look at the sidebar here on our subreddit, there are a few helpful links posted, have a look at them. Two books I regularly recommend are Graves' Disease: A Practical Guide and Natural Treatment Solutions for Hyperthyroidism and Graves' Disease. Right now you're only worried because you don't have the information you need, gaining as much knowledge on the topic, will help relieve some of that stress and anxiety.

Graves Disease can (but not always) affect the eyes it can cause a condition called Graves' ophthalmopathy which is a protruding of the eyes. However, Graves has a HUGE list of symptoms though nobody experiences all of them. This disease affects each person differently with each person experiencing varying degrees of symptoms as well as varying symptoms.

In any case I highly recommend you and your boyfriend arming yourself with as much knowledge and research as possible.

Good Luck!

P.S. I consider the wikipedia article on Graves to be pretty good, it's definitely worth a read. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graves'_disease
