I have both the gel guards and the harder plastic armor guards. They both feel pretty good while adding some protection when lying your switch down and also the added bulk on the back of the grips really helps you hold onto the switch better. I do find that I like the gel grips better as the armor guards are more open (which I like) but can get in way of trigger buttons more which I don't like as much. Also the armor guards feel a bit loose at times but still for pretty smug, the gel guards do feel better in the hands and seem to fit better although they cover mover of the controller so the buttons are like half covered. This is mostly only a problem with the plus and minus buttons the rest are still easy to press. Also I prefer the joystick covers that come with the gel guards as they are silicon and have a better grip than the armor guards ones which are most plastic feeling and kinda slippery. I would say they both are def worth getting depending on your play style and the pros and cons I listed.
Here's a link to the gel guards I have. You can find them at most stores too instead of Amazon if you like.

If you can get the -- button unstuck, I'd recommend grabbing a pair of these. I got a pair the other day because I wasn't a fan of the paint texture of the joycons themselves, and they've been probably my favorite Switch accessory ever since.

I play mostly on handheld, so I got a pair of silicone sleeves for the joycons, and they're actually really comfortable because of the ergonomic bump on the back.

They make silicone covers that have controller like grips on the back. It doesn't make it bigger but it fees a lot bigger in hand.

I recommend these PDP gel guards. I have multiple pairs in different colors. Cheap and they make it more comfortable.

Those are the joy con gel grips. I got the same one and they're great.

If you want a protective but not as aesthetic option id recommend a combination of these two things off of amazon

https://www.amazon.com/PowerA-Hybrid-Cover-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B01N22YBVY/ref=sr_1_3?crid=36NGRU7P5EXJB&keywords=nintendo%2Bswitch%2Bflip%2Bcase&qid=1571879299&sprefix=nintendo%2Bswitch%2Bflip%2Caps%2C139&sr=8-3&th=1

(A hybrid case than can open and flip shut)

and

https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Switch-Comfort-Grip-Grey-Guards/dp/B01MUAO202/ref=sr_1_4?crid=2B2R99FX54P59&keywords=nintendo%2Bswitch%2Bjoycon%2Bguard&qid=1571879348&sprefix=nintendo%2Bswitch%2Bjoy%2Bcon%2Bgu%2Caps%2C167&sr=8-4&th=1

this will get you full button functionality as well as the ability to flip it open and shut. also 3d printing would probably be more expensive unless you have one locally available.

For holding the joycons independently I very much recommend these gel guards. I was holding off on getting them because I thought it would make them feel cheap, but quite the opposite, now I love holding them. The thumb caps add just enough size and grip to the analog sticks too. Totally worth the 8 or so bucks. Different colors are available too.

Second the screen protector and skin from dbrand. My dock was really scratching up the back of my switch and I wish I’d bought one before.
I have this case and really love it - it’s a super sleek case that’s contoured for your switch and includes two screen protectors. I also have these gel grips that makes playing handheld significantly more comfortable without bulking my switch up too much (it still perfectly fits in my case.

I have these PDP ones: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01MUAO202/

Tomtoc doesn't look deep enough to accommodate the silicon grip bumps. Helpful to know yours fit, though the Nyko joycon covers don't have the same bump.

u/Klarkasaurus · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I only use handheld and I found the switch just uncomfortable and because of that I would press down pretty hard and it would get a bit hot so I got some grips for it and it made it so much better.

You shouldn’t be able to feel the back heat unless you’ve got some massive hands or hold the switch strangely.

I use these grips

They stick out from the bottom as well so if you lay it down flat it doesn’t touch the back of the tablet.

I don't think there are bigger ones, but you could get some sort of grip to help you with the cramps, there are some silicon or hard plastic shells out there, i have the silicon ones that came in the switch starter kit

Completely agree with this. These grips are pretty cheap and they feel good. I've got the ones made by pdp and I never take them off. They apparently don't sell any green grips in the US, but I was able to find some by orzly in the UK

u/nermal543 · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

How about something like this? It's not perfect but it would offer a bit of protection. Or they make little gel guards like this if that's more what you're looking for.

I haven't used either of these products personally, they are just accessories I've seen around.

u/Saurian_Flame · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

You've got a point. However, I do realize now that I'll be carrying the Carrying Case in a backpack so I can just put the accessories I'll be traveling with in it.

I'm also looking into JoyCon Grips, and I found these. Would they happen to be the ones you have? Either way, I think I'd be really keen on picking them up.

u/TemptedTemplar · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

these may help, but if your hands are big they may not feel thick enough.

u/LampCable · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I have big hands, but I have never had a problem with the ergonomics of the joycon. I've owned every Nintendo handheld though so maybe I'm just used to it.

My recommendation would be to first borrow a friend's 3DS. Play smash bros or something intense on it for a while and that should give you a pretty good idea of how the switch will feel.

You could always get some of these to help with comfort as well (see the third pic) https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01MUAO202/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_XVW6yb5WWWKHK

Generally though, everybody is different. You won't know until you try it. But I would bet if you just start playing Zelda you'll be having too much fun to even think about whether or not your hands feels comfortable.

u/ExternalRoof · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Is there a ultra thin case to protect just the body of the switch (the tablet part only) or a 3 Piece with Joycons still detachable that can fit the Butterfox case comfortably something like this? Or is the Switch better off naked (without a case)? Also are these PDP Gel Guards worth it even with all the bad reviews?

Edit: A Word

u/Tommyp2006 · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

I bought a set of these and they make the joycons much more comfortable to use, especially with them attached to the screen. Just wish that they had better joysticks now.

u/Auswulf · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

The gel based ones are pretty comfy. I got some red pokemon themed ones with my PDP Switch case.

Just took a look on Amazon and they sell them separately, found a grey pair but guessing there might be other colours and themed ones if you have a hunt.
