Hold on, there are a few things to consider. If you've already ordered, there may be time to cancel.

Here is the same shaving cream, with a brush, for slightly cheaper. The company that makes Proraso also makes the same cream under different brand names. They even make one for Bath & Body Works under the C.O. Bigelow name. This boar brush will be excellent, at least as good as the Parker. I haven't heard anything about that brush, but I do have a pretty great Parker brush with badger hair. My Omega brand boar hair brush is my favorite.

That razor is fine, but you will need a blade sampler.

I have the rest of my recommendations here.

The last item is actually a brush/stand/soap combo. Here is the amazon link to it.

The brush you got can be hit or miss, some people have great results with it but I've seen quite some complaints as well. This brush would be my first choice, this is a nice budget brush and the soap is identical to the (old) Proraso.

Derby blades are well liked, but blades are very individual. I'd recommend a sampler instead of just buying one brand.

1 The pre-post can be found cheaper, so can the shaving soap

2/3 This razor is a great starter razor. After you master it and still want something more aggressive you can try a slant or a Muhle R41.

For several months I've been trying to follow the advice of using as little pressure as possible, just enough so that the razor is still in contact with the skin. I won't claim I'm doing well - something is clearly wrong - but I am definitely trying.

The razor was a gift so I don't know exactly what it is, but it's by Merkur. Here are two pictures from my phone: here and here.

My routine is long hot shower, exfoliate with washcloth. Out of shower, lather in a mug (this is the brush this is the cream). I generally do 5 rounds, lathering before each: with the grain, with the grain, across, against, touch-up. Post-shave all I do is rub in some generic face lotion.

Cool, thanks for the tips! My original plan was to buy this nice little kit from Omega, it had pretty decent reviews, but the price just jumped $10. Another idea I'd had was to pick this up from Walmart, as they were selling it for $20 and it had decent reviews again. I'm gonna shop the Omega brushes on Amazon and see what's to be found, I'd like to get a boar brush.

I know I know, buy a nice brush and you'll only have to buy one, but I'm on a tight budget, and I know people hear this complaint every single day around here, haha.

Proraso, got it! Thanks for the recommendation!

Here's a relatively inexpensive kit to get you started with traditional wet shaving. If you're willing to spend more put it towards a better razor, like an Edwin Jagger DE8x series. Let me know if you have questions and enjoy your first wet shave.

Lord L6 DE razor - $12.75

Blade Sampler - $10

Omega brush and soap - $20

You could also upgrade to this Omega kit for a couple dollars more.

I found this to be a great starter kit.

From the ingredient list, the soap seems identical to the tube of Proraso, minus a few ingredients at the very end.
