This is the HP OMEN 15 2018. Little over your budget but. Pretty compact. You'll get narrow bezels, keyboard is awesome on this one. 128SSD and 7200rpm 1TB HDD which is very beneficial.
12 GB 2666 Mhz RAM. These are the highlights
This also gets hot but after a BIOS update from HP temperatures have gone down.

Since you seem to want to play Overwatch at high settings and care about nothing else, I can recommend any laptop with a GTX1050Ti which is quite a capable GPU like this one from Acer (great budget PC) or this one from HP (better build as well as a PCIe SSD boot drive). I would go for the HP because it's everyday performance will be better, but if you're limited by price, get the Acer. Both are targeted at gamers and get the job done very well.

il give you specs you’ll want to look for.

8th Gen Intel processor (eg i7-8750H CPU or i5-8300H) they’re great.

and something like a GTX 1050 from nvidia GPU or MX150 from AMD. those will run most games on medium settings at 60FPS
atleast 8GB of RAM

most “gaming” laptops tend to be above $900. i recommend getting a gtx 1060 if you want to play games well for a while. thats about $1200 USD with tax.
The other common GPU is a GTX 1050Ti. its not as good as the 1060 but it plays everything.

i really dont know much about the battery life for laptops, but the HP Omen 15
is a good laptop. may not be a very good school looking laptop, but you’ll want to look at laptop with similar specs.

this is probably the best choice. it has allot of great internals and is about $930USD.
also it doesnt scream gaming red fire death you know?

oh and last thing, you can change the 2.5” drive. typically the “1TB HDD” to anything else with the 2.5” size. it does tend to void the warranty though.

I am on the same boat as you. though i have my eye on the OMEN (cheaper, around 950 to 1200 USD depending on which CPU you want) and the Dell G7 15 (about 1200 USD depending on what you ask inside it) Both laptops are pretty decent for mid tier gaming, I like them because they look less flashy. I dont want to be caught in public with a laptop that looks like the predator 300... looks like a sports car... i rather have something that just looks a bit more normal.

I would like to purchase a gaming laptop that is the most bang for my buck under 1500. The games I normally play are not super intensive (games like Civ 5, Rim World, Factorio, LOL) but I would like the option to play newer games with decent performance such as BL3. I dont care too much about small storage as I wouldnt mind getting an external hard drive.

I also have to use this laptop for school and programing, so I would like it to be linux compatible and under 17 in.

It ran all games pretty smoothly at 60 FPS, although of course settings weren't at the highest. Just depends on the game you play, if you wanna list some out I can give you some advice on what would work
