Your first point about getting a good mic is so true! I've seen way too many videos with some low quality, noisy recording and it's just not worth listening to. For my videos I either use my Sennheiser headset mic (although I don't like how loud my breathing sounds with that) or my Samson C01U which sounds fantastic.

I'd also recommend cleaning it up in something like Audacity to remove any static in the background.

My friend has a Turtle Beach, and he's thinking about selling it because it's just so difficult to use. The microphone always plays back through his headphones, and it uses up a USB port as well as the headphone jack.

I bought a Sennheiser PC330 G4ME for about £60, but for some reason it's more expensive in America. However, it's definitely worth the money.

A own a few:

Sennheiser HD518 Amazon.com Link

Amazing headphones for games. Not costly at all but have fantastic range and are incredibly comfortable to wear. I have yet to see any headphones near the HD518's that are equally as good. I have worn these for hours on end day after day.

Tried to get into the whole "Headset" deal. Was not impressed, the earcups on the 330's are aweful compared to the HD series. I really should have gotten the next level up for the better earcups. The microphone is decent quality and comes through clear without any interference. So that's a plus.

Probably my oldest pair of headphones. Got these guys when they were hip. They are a fantastic set and are excellent to listen to all day, Although the earcups are kinda "flat" compared to the others. So I can feel the earcups against me. It creates a better listening environment but after long sessions you may get irratation on the sides of your ears

After Boxing day I will probably be hunting for another sale. The Sennhieser Game Ones use the same HD series earcup, The new corsairs Voids are out which I would love to try. Of course Audio-technica's are always really pretty.

This is your best bet. Ignore the USB part of your request because any headset can be made USB for very cheap DAC's.

The majority of USB headsets ship with a low quality DAC anyway. So don't bother.

Grab one of these as well if you require USB.

That's a very high quality one, but you can go cheap if budget is an issue, and then upgrade later.

Truthfully, one of those has to get cut.

Reliability is very subjective, most "gaming" headsets don't last long. If I were to recommend something reliable to you, I would recommend the PC330's, the only thing they lack that you want is a USB connection, which means nothing. It is actually worse. There are USB sound cards for 2 dollars out there, or you can get a regular sound card for your PC that is 25 dollars (Asus Xonar DG), these are much better.

If aren't hell-bent on getting a headset, please look at my other post

No response yesterday so I'll try again...

  • Budget: The lowest I want to pay is $60, the max I want to pay is $125. I have a $40 pre-paid VISA that will help bring this down to me paying $85 max.

  • Source: My laptop. I do NOT have a dedicated soundcard, so I NEED this headset to have a USB soundcard. MUST have a built-in mic.

  • Requirements for Isolation: Using only in the comfort of my home. Does not matter ultimately.

  • Preferred Type of Headphone: Prefer Full-sized, On Ear is good too if the sound quality and longevity is worth it.

  • Preferred Tonal Balance: Strong Bass would be awesome, but needs to have good highs too. If it can surpass Plantronics GameCom 780, I want it.

  • Past Headphones:
    • Plantronics GameCom 780 - if the new pair you recommend is better than these in terms of build quality, longevity, bass and overall sound quality, and less than $125 before I apply my $40 pre-paid VISA, PLEASE list it here!
    • Bose OE - I still use this when I'm on the go. Not nearly as good as my Plantronics in my opinion.

  • Preferred music: I listen to about 50% Rap/Hip-Hop, stuff that brings out the bass. 25% Alternative and Indie Rock, 25% Eletronic (ex: Daft Punk)

  • Additional Information: I'm looking for a comfortable headset + built-in mic combo to replace my Plantronics GameCom 780 that recently broke after one year. I know that buying a headphone and mic separately is the best option but I do not have a dedicated soundcard in my laptop. I used my headset for gaming and communication in League of Legends with friends and for music on my laptop. Best $50 I've spent on a headset and I'm happy it lasted this long (obviously would have preferred longer). So, I've been researching for a week on what headset to purchase next, and stepping up my budget slightly. Here is what I've narrowed down to:

  • Plantronics GameCom Commander, $80 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826265264

  • Sennheiser PC 330, $125 (don't see USB soundcard on these however)

  • Corsair Vengeance 1500 v2, $65 http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance-Dolby-Gaming-Headset/dp/B00EXPNFQO/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1406326162&sr=1-1&keywords=corsair+vengeance+]1500

  • Logitech G35, $95 http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-7-1-Channel-Surround-Sound-Headset/dp/B001O5CCQK/ref=pd_cp_e_3]
