My son got a wooden abacus at about 5 months, and still plays with it daily at nearly 8 months, he loves moving the beads and rolling them :) Also we love nesting cups! We got the Plan Toys nesting chicken:

and a stacking tower, he loved taking the rings off and inspecting them. Also we filled jars with dye/water/glitter/beads/oil etc. So he can examine the contents, he still plays with those as well :)

Also he was REALLY into tags, textures and details at that age, so we made a tag blanket with several different types of ribbon. And also a string sensory board. We ran different types of string (ribbon/twine/rope/chain/tape etc) through a cardboard box and he spent a long time each day honing in his fine motor fiddling with the different strings.
Also wooden blocks, we stack them up, he would smash them down, still play that today :)
I can honestly say, my son only has a few toys rated his age. Most are 12+months. I am with him 24/7, especially when playing and such, so he is under my watchful eye with them, so I don't worry.
