I got myself a nice dock to plug into my Synology DS1817, and these great 3.5" cases

Ill be doing a monthly backup of important files, and keeping the drive at work in a locked drawer

I wouldn't go cracking the thing open just to add an SSD. I recommend this enclosure:

Get a new hard drive and a docking station (https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-10Gbps-Upright-Cables-Supports/dp/B01E80N2E8/). Install the new hard drive into your PC and the old one into the docking station.

Then robocopy files from old one to new one.

The docking station I listed is more expensive compared to others, but as far as I know Pluggable ones doesn't do weird logical block emulation when dealing with large capacity drives like other docking station would do.

I have a StarTech SATDOCKU3S, it works fine (some people don't like the "soft" power button, i.e. the button must be physically pushed again after a power loss): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0033AF5WW

If you're specifically interested in cloning, StarTech also has "duplicator" models with multiple slots: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019Y4JE22/

This Plugable model has USB-C as an option, I've used other products from them before with good success https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01E80N2E8/

Not really anything to do with Build a PC, though.

I'm not aware of any more "industrial" docks. I have a single disk dock that works ok for me, but it doesn't see a lot of hard use.

http://www.highpoint-tech.com/USA_new/series_RS5322-overview.htm - eSATA? More speed, but less convenient to plug in.

Otherwise, get more docks but single drive. That way, at least you won't screw up transfers from one drive when plugging in and out.

There are USB drive bays, but I'm guessing that's not really what you're looking for.

The next step up is using a small NAS, but they don't come cheap.

I was waiting for the SM961 or 960 Pro too. But came up with a solution. Get this https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Upright-Supports-Systems-Compatible/dp/B01E80N2E8 and plugin one of your existing/old SSDs. Use that till the 960 Pro lands! Working well for me on my old Intel X25-M 160GB drive. :) I was going to buy one of those Plugable docks anyway, main system drive on Linux Mint or Antergos, Windows 10 on an SSD for LoL.

Totally agree on the quadcore being the marquee feature. It works pretty well for gaming if you're not big into AAA graphics-oriented titles. If you're more of a hardcore competitive gamer, CSGo, LoL etc then it works great. Those are the good games anyway if you ask me.

Seems to be pretty legit. I dont like docks that dont enclosure the HDD, but those for 3.1 are much cheaper (for having USB C).
