Well here is what I would do.

Turntable: something like this. Good deal with buy it now price of $270.

Cartridge: Sure 97xe can be had for $66 bucks here

Amp: Either spend some time perusing Ebay/ Craigslist for something vintage with phono inputs. If your having trouble with that you could go for one of these. On sale for $168 is a good deal and has built in phono inputs, no need for a preamp.

Speakers: A pair of these will do you well for $270. Don't have a pair myself but I hear great things and I personally love my Polk floor-standers.

Furniture: As always the r/vinyl approved Ikea Expedit Will hold everything nicely for $80.

This would all cost you roughly $850. Leaving you about $150 for the vinyl itself(which can go a pretty far way if you look around). Of course you could always go for a cheaper pair of speakers or shop around for a cheaper TT if you want more to spend on the actual music itself. Anywho, Just my 2 cents. Good luck with your setup and I hope I was helpful.

I haven't dealt with high end audio before so I'm a noob at this stuff. I just bought these speakers to hook up to my new Audio Technica LP-120 that I got for Christmas. I opened the box and was ready to connect the cables up, but those speakers have screw-in plug ins and the record player just has the regular red/white banana plugs. Is there some adapter I can buy to get it working properly? I'm using the built in pre amp as well.

I got my first TT about a year ago. It's an AT-LP-120. After a year of loving it I'm ready to upgrade my sound. I am planning on removing the built in pre-amp, and getting new speakers.

I've picked out the Polk Audio RTI A1's for my new speakers but now I need help finding an amp and a pre-amp to go with it. I have seen people recommend receivers and amps but I don't know what I should go for. I was looking at the Yamaha RS-201 for a receiver. I don't really know where to start for pre-amps, as I've seen tons of different things recommended.

I want to keep my amp+pre-amp solution around the $200 mark, but if you think that's not possible then let me know. If you guys have any suggestions on how to proceed that would be great.

I’m looking to purchase a vintage micro hifi system with bi-amp speaker outs, so it requires a bi-amp speaker.

My questions are:

Is there any way I can use standard speakers instead?

How hard is it to rewire a standard speaker?

Are there any very compact bookshelf speakers that are bi-wire? The smallest I can find are: Polk Audio RTiA1 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000V2UBSI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_aLl4DbHFAZH6M

What I’m really looking for are very compact speakers to go along with this unit and in the space I have for it, but seems I’m very restricted by this unit.

I might be a little bit late on this thread to get a response, but I am getting confused by all the information about beginner set-ups and could use some help. I do not own anything yet, and this will probably just be a casual thrift-store-searching-for-records hobby.
Can I get this turntable (I think it has a built in amp?) and these speakers and call it a day?

I read the uturn simple set-up bit and just having turntables and speakers really appeals to me. Are the speakers I linked powered? And if not, does anyone have any suggestions for speakers I should get?

Additionally, do I need to get a new cartridge even with new turntables? And if so are there any recommendations for the turntables I linked? And wires...how do I know what wires I will need to connect things?

The RTi's have a good reputation. I haven't heard them in a long time but the S series Polks didn't sound bad when I last heard them in the blue box. They sounded much better than a lot of the previous offerings. I also recommended the RTi's but wanted to keep it kinda small. Also look at amazon for some better pricing. A3 $330, A1 $250 (also an option because you're getting a sub).

I've never heard of the brands KEF or HTD. Do they have good reputations? Oh yes they do. HTD is an internet direct (ID) company that a lot of folks like. KEF is a UK speaker brand that has been around since the 60's. I own several KEF speakers and love them. I'm biased towards their sound and their Uni-Q technology (coaxial driver arrangement). Of the list they would be my go to choice but again I'm biased.

I'm looking for an amp to suit my soon to be set up. Here is the gear, but I don't want some giant bulky receiver. I'm looking for something small-ish preferably that looks nice. I don't need a crazy amount of inputs or anything.

any recomendations?

turntable: Pioneer PL-30-K It has a phono pre-amp built in

Speakers: ProbablyPolk Audio RTI A1 but i've not fully committed.

I paired my carbon with this amp and these speakers. I bought my girlfriend the same set up but got [this] (http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-8050-Network-Stereo-Receiver/dp/B004UR486G/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1395520405&sr=8-6&keywords=Onkyo+tx) amp instead. They both sound pretty awesome. The only time I wish I'd bought full range speakers is when I'm listening to something like aphex twin with crazy deep bass and even most of those tracks sound pretty good. Their are some audiophile forums for buying used gear where you might be able to find some stuff cheap like Audiogon.
