Do NOT use any product from Sally’s or the drugstore.....that said, here’s what I do at home:

Guy Tang Big 9 lightening cream (bleach)
Ion 20 or 30 volume developer

If you don’t want to spend the money for Olaplex, then this is a really good and affordable alternative that will protect the integrity of your hair. However, you must bump up the strength of the developer when using this:

The ratio of Big 9 to developer is on the tube. Follow this exactly.
If you hair is super short, no need for foils.
Use a hair color bowl (which is plastic, never mix/use metal bowls or utensils)
You’ll need a hair color tint brush (from Sally’s or the like)

Once the bleach and developer are mixed they are only good for one hour....so don’t mix more than you think you need. It’s better to mix less and then do a new batch than to overdo it.

Look at a “hair level chart” and determine your level of pigment. You’re not looking for your exact color but the depth of the pigment. If you’re a level 4 or lower, then mix the bleach and developer and proceed to apply to unwashed (very important since the natural oils on the scalp help to prevent irritation) hair 1/2 inch AWAY from the roots. If your hair is so short that there isn’t much distance from the ends to the roots, then apply the bleach all over. Apply quickly starting in the back and then cover with a plastic shower cap. Check the bleach in 20 minutes. You want to lift the hair to the pale yellow stage (on the top, the back will already be there which is why you do it first), like the inside of a banana. (That means PAST the red/orange stage so if that’s what you see, cover with the shower cap and check in another 20 minutes). Remember, the bleach mixture is only active for 60 minutes, which includes the application time and all the time fooling around in between. So if you check every 10-15 minutes but nothing is happening, then rinse well, shampoo twice and then dry your hair and start all over....BUT you’ll need to apply some kind of oil (like coconut or jojoba) to your scalp since you just washed away all the existing oil.....mix up a new batch of bleach and reapply in the same way, continuing to check every 15 minutes or so.

You can always speed things up with heat if your arm won’t get exhausted from holding a hair dryer. Or even better, a bonnet attachment you can get at Sally’s is the best option and doesn’t involve any arm strength.....be sure and check every 10 minutes.

You need to watch a lot of YouTube tutorials on diy bleach so you know what you’re getting into. Just do NOT use any drugstore/Sally’s bleach. The Guy Tang Big 9 lifts up to 9 levels which is more than you need so watch carefully. And be sure you condition really well afterward.
