Most autism treatments that have evidence behind them target specific symptoms. SCD is basically made of symptoms that are a subset of the whole list of autism symptoms. So, the assumption is that most of the ASD treatments that target social communication will be effective with SCD. (The most effective treatments being things like social skills training, etc..) You're right that this assumption hasn't been well-tested, though it does make sense.

Speech pathologists sometimes talk about "pragmatic language disorder" which is basically the same thing, so if you're looking for families with similar experiences, that might be another route to try.

There are some scientists who don't believe that SCD should really be thought of as a separate disorder, but rather just a subtype of autism. They cite a variety of research, including the fact that families with an autistic member are more likely than chance to have an SCD member, suggesting that they have some genetic commonalities. There are other researchers who argue that the two conditions are meaningfully separate. Ultimately, how the various labels are classified might not mean too much, but it may be worth thinking about if you're looking to connect with others, as there are a lot more ASD-diagnosed individuals than SCD-diagnosed.

P.S. Despite Super-Duper Publications having a dumb name, they have good products. This one looks to be about right for practicing social communication with a 5yo child.
