I have a wedge and pop apple slicer. It has an attached base with a hinge. You slice the apple with the base open and out of the way, when the blades push down as far as the can go you flip tell base around and push the blades down the last little bit. It totally separates the slices from the core.
It's super easy, my 4 year old kids use it. They eat a whole apple if I slice it like this, if I give them the apple without slicing it they eat a ring around th e apple then give up on it.
This is a great apple corer...really makes it easy for when I juice apples.
