Ok..... The question was specific to success on the Psychology GRE Subject Test, which I recently took and scored well on.

You literally just linked to the first things that show up when you search for the Psych GRE on Amazon, which is probably not helpful at all.

>what is more worthwhile is focus on learning the specific topics you're interested in

That is terrible advice, unless you don't care about your score.

This is the book I read cover-to-cover. It is well written, but I am not a fan of the formatting: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0393977676/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The book on Psychology that I was told to read as an undergraduate in Psychology (European here) was this one: https://www.amazon.com/Psychology-Henry-Gleitman/dp/0393977676. You can search on duckduckgo "Psychology gleitman" and you may find a pdf for download. This book does not offer an extensive history of Psychology, it has a thematic approach. So, after reading the introductory chapters, if you then want to know about Emotions, for example, you find its section and read the many theories and basic approaches to it.

I would suggest some courses that you can find in class central (https://www.class-central.com/search?q=psychology), although some may be too superficial (you can use the ratings and websites as a guide. Edx and Coursera usually offer more in-dept courses than, e.g., FutureLearn). If you want to learn about (Scientific) Psychology, the main bases you need to cover are Social and Cognitive Psychology. Gestalt and Behaviorism are also historic but pretty fun and foundational movements for Scientific Psychology. You probably can find in Wikipedia the foundational researchers in each of these areas of Psychology.
