I always wince when I go to other peoples' houses and help them prepare food. Even the fucking foodies have knives as blunt as a Frisbee. I find myself using tons of force to cut something like a cucumber, because their shitty ass dull knives can't get through the skin, and worrying constantly that I'm going to knife-gnaw my thumb off in the process.
That does it. I'm getting everyone my favorite $10 cheap pink knife.
I have this brand: http://www.amazon.com/Pure-Komachi-Series-Chefs-Knife/dp/B0029X8INC/ref=sr_1_5?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1377831455&sr=1-5&keywords=pure+komachi
I have the chefs knife, paring knife, bread knife, and tomato knife and I love them all. They're really sharp and lightweight, and you can sharpen them. I've had them a few years now and they've held up extremely well. Bonus, they're cute looking!
