Typically, you aim for 85mm or 135mm (in 35mm/FF) for portraiture. Get an 85mm prime or something sharp in that range and it'll work on your crop and if and when you step up to a full frame.

Hello everyone!


I am purchasing a new camera lens soon, but I am no quiet sure on what I should get. I will be going to a Car show next month and in the next two months I'll be going to Dallas Comic-Con: Fan Days & Austin Comic-Con.

Here are the lens I'm thinking would be ideal for these situations and fits in my budget. If you have another lens to suggest I am open to suggestions, but my budget is around $300-$400 and I own a Canon Ti2 Rebel.

For portraits, you'll wanna start looking at the speed(aperature) of a lens. The faster the lens the shallower the depth of field and also good for natural lighting or low lighting. Another thing to look at is the range 70-135 is usually perfect for portraits. Also, you'll need to find a price range. This rokinon is said to be a good lens for portrait work but is only manual focus. At $300 though it seems like a good deal if you can live without manual focus for one of your lenses.

As for landscapes we'd go to the other end and get wider. Thats also depends on how wide you want there's the 24mm, 28mm, 35mm and some even use lenes like 10-22mm. It all depends on what look your going for. Some of the primes are also very fast giving you a good street photography lens at the same time.

There's also zoom lenses with decently fast aperatures which could possibly get both jobs done. They won't be as fast as some of the primes you can get but, again it usually starts with what your willing to spend.

If you're willing to manually focus and want bang for your buck there's the Rokinon 85M-C 85mm F1.4. I've read the performance is phenomenal. If you're willing to manually focus and have money to burn the Zeiss Milvus 85mm f/1.4 is said to be even sharper than the Canon 85mm f/1.2L. Personally if you have a decent budget I'd wait for the reviews of the Sigma 85 1.4 Art then decide

For creamy bokeh and a unbeatable sharpness for a fraction of the price of the Canon 85mm

It's manual focus, but honestly it's a good habit to get into anyway.
