Actually started as a response to /u/ClarkW_Griswold , but turned into more of a general response.

Part time greaser checking in! As much as I like layrite, I'm going to disagree as to this being its purpose. Layrite is perfect if A) it's dry outside B) you need serious lift - generally over an inche of pompadour (which is how I use it, and I layer it with other product on the sides) C) you don't like washing your hair with dish soap for a week afterwards like with Murrays Superior :-P

For a regular slickback I'd say go with a light to medium petroleum based pomade. Feels good (to me, less so as it gets heavier), works easy, super cheap, and washes out of the hair much easier than the Murray's Superior (I mean, the only things that are harder to wash out than Murrays Superior are candle wax, chewing gum, and glue). Easiest to find in stores is Royal Crown Hair Conditioner (look in the 'ethnic hair aisle'), but if you can find it the Royal Crown pomade which smells better and has a better hold. But if you're going to order something (or are lucky enough to find it in a good beauty supply) I'd suggest the lighter Dax products, with the [regular Pomade] ( http://www.amazon.com/DAX-DAX-8660-Dax-Pomade-Ounce/dp/B000NN3GCI/) being my recommendation for this style, with the Super Light and Lanolin coming in right behind. Great smell, a little lift, and easy to get in and out of the hair. In any case, all the options in this range are distinctly affordable, and I think more guys should try them out.
