Aphrodite is a patron goddess of sex workers. Many of her followers engaged in prostitution, including her priestesses, especially in Cyprus. Ishtar is another patron goddess of sex workers. In Babylon, her temple rites involved ritual sex for payment, and women of all classes would, at one point in their lifetime, engage in sex for payment (the women visited the temple, and sat on a special chair until a man paid them for sex). Temple inscriptions called Ishtar a compassionate prostitute. This book has more info on the mythology surrounding sacred sex workers.
Aphrodite is closely associated with bathing and personal grooming. There are a number of bathing rituals associated with her worship, and mythology associated with her bathing before and after sex. This is not purification in the Biblical sense of washing away sins, because there was nothing sinful or amoral about sex, but ablution rituals are the precursor to baptism. So there is something very cleansing about ritual bathing. Since she was born from the sea, salt water baths are associated with Aphrodite, but she also bathed in spring water. Aphrodite was a compassionate and caring goddess (unless you got on her bad side!).
