You need to install an exclusion door. There are a number of models you can just buy and install, but many people make their own - it is basically a "one way door".

Ok what you want then is an "excluder". A one-way gate that lets critters out...

Here's a squirrel size one ....not a cage ...the other end is open. That's just one...I'm sure there are other kinds of one way devices...
