Here's everything for equipment, so hopefully this answers any questions:

You are going to pay more for a cloud solution than local. No matter what, you will be paying for a server, either at your place or a cloud provider's server. You also will have to buy expanded bandwidth to handle all the channels of video.

I don't know how much capacity you are needing, but I'm guessing you need 60 terabytes or more. That won't be cheap any way you go.

I'd check with a VAR or NVR people, but I have a feeling your best bet will be buying a bunch of Ironwolf drives or WD Red Pros, and putting your Synology device in an air conditioned, shock mounted, humidity controlled room or enclosure. Alternatively, perhaps consider SSDs as something heat/humidity/shock resistant.

None of this will be cheap, but I would be genuinely surprised if a cloud provider can beat the Synology for total cost after 3-5 years.

While I was indeed totally joking, you did get me curious. I am building a van right now as well, and I have data storage needs currently being met by a couple RAID 1s of huge spinners. On my 12 TB box, I use 8 TB for actual storage of old data and 4TB for automatic backup of my laptops. I think my solution is going to be to spend $400 on a 4TB SSD (cheapest I can find right now is $499 (but I bet it’ll come down). I’ll leave the SSD on connected to a low power server all the time for wireless automatic backups to that, then every couple weeks when I’m parked, image the contents of the SSD over to that section of my spinning HDDs.

Maybe it’s overkill. I have much smaller data storage needs than you (or most of r/datahoarders) so a single large SSD will be enough for me to have most of the convenience without needing to turn on the old HDDs to get at ALL my stuff. HDDs can take a lot of shock while they’re not in use; driving with them off should be zero issue.

For example, https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Inch-Internal-MZ-76Q1T0B-AM/dp/B07L3CLM2B/ref=sr_1_4?crid=1NAAIOAN5FO0K and their is a suggetion to bundle it together with a external enclosure. Not sure how well it would work for gaming, but it still comes in at under $500. I swore I remember seeing a 4TB a lot cheaper, but maybe I am mixing up things I seen a week ago.
