I think brand is more important than the crushed vs whole peeled choice. The brand I prefer has crushed tomatoes that are hard to tell apart from whole their peeled tomatoes in recipes, so I usually have crushed on hand, and use them. Some brands' crushed tomatoes have more than just tomatoes in the ingredient list.

The US doesn't protect the name San Marzano, which is a region of Italy. True San Marzano tomatoes are grown in Italy. There is a popular US brand called "San Marzano" which are grown in CA: "These tomatoes, however, are not grown in Southern Italy - instead, they come from authentic San Marzano seeds grown in fertile California dirt.".
