I use an extra large octopus clip to put my hair up because all hair ties just end up knotted into my very thick hair. If I am sleeping then I pineapple it on top of my head to preserve my curls, but if I just want it up to work out or whatever I gently pull it back into a ponytail shape, plop the ends on top of my head, clip at the back of my head where I want the most volume, then rearrange the ends over it.

Idk how much hair you have, but I've starting using these almost exclusively: Scunci No-slip Grip Octopus Clip, 8.5 Cm, [Natural, Tortoise Shell, Black] Set of 3 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00J6SDPTU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_eZLQwbQM2T36F Almost any hair ties either pull my hair too much or don't hold it up well enough. This lets me just pile it up on top of my head and clip it there without the weight pulling on it.
