They are indeed feeders, although the fish person at the store (who honestly was not all that knowledgable, you're right about that... They and the Pleco advice came from a big box type pet store, the LFS guy didn't say I COULDN'T have a baby pleco in a 10 gallon, but did look visibly relieved when I mentioned "I'll put in an order when I get a 30 gallon")

The pet store told me the minnows were tossed because the person who bought them had called her boyfriend and he told her to get feeder goldfish, not minnows. He offered to put them back in the feeder tank, but then said I could take them for free to cycle my tank. Does that make it more likely these fish are better?

I've got the chemicals and stuff for treating the water, and there is no fish in the tank except the minnows. I have a bottle of this stuff: https://www.amazon.com/Seachem-116060608-ParaGuard-250ml/dp/B0002A5X7I coming to make sure they are healthy if I keep them. There are no other fish in the tank right now, so no worries of infecting another fish with anything they have. Is there anything I should do to check if there's something 'sick' in my tank? I've got 2-3 months before I'm planning to get the betta (its my birthday gift to myself in June, but I may wait until July or August before I get one, since we have a family wedding coming up.) so I'm taking things slow.

Filter is a sponge filter, I have Stability and stuff coming, it didn't get shipped with the rest of my stuff and I wasn't planning on getting fish today so I really wasn't fully prepared. But

They seem kinda schooled? I mean all five kinda swim around together so far.

If they do not work out with a betta, they have a second home lined up. Someone I know has offered to take them to live with his minnows if they cause problems with the betta. (His tank started with a cup of bait minnows... So probably not a luxurious life, but better than fed to a turtle I guess. The turtle might disagree.) If needed, I can give him the minnows before the betta comes up and clean/re-cycle the tank.

What are your water parameters? It never hurts to do a large water change, especially with the other illness you're experiencing. Also I don't think it's ich or a bite, looks like either a bacterial infection or perhaps something fungal? Either way, Seachem Paraguard is a good general cure medication that helps with a few different ailments.

If you do decide to get the Paraguard, I would stop the tea tree treatment, as it (Paraguard) covers fungal infections as well. Less is more when it comes to treating fish illness. Hope this helps!

ok, I guess if it's cycled, it'd be 0 then. I was thinking maybe internal parasite then. Sometimes fish can come in with them. I don't, but I know that many people treat new fish for it even if they don't know just to be sure. Observe if it has long stringy whitish poop.

PraziPro is one a lot use and the other is Paraguard is the other one in case you decide to treat tank.

The photo clearly shows damaged gills and dormant behavior. Flukes infestation combined with ammonia typically leads to that. It appears as if a fungal infection is kicking in. (Flukes slowly kill and cause tons of fungal infections in the process)

OP, your best bet is going with Hikari's PraziPro or Seachem's Paraguard, stress coat, and serving soft fruits / vegetables to boost the immune system. Then dose Seachem's Kanaplex separately to deal with the fungus.

https://www.amazon.com/Kanaplex-5-g-0-18-oz/dp/B00CJ0VY8G/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?

BTW, can you show off photos of the entire body for better judgement? If it's ICH, Hikari's Ich-X alone would beat the daylights out of the ICH and fungus at the same time.

https://www.amazon.com/Hikari-USA-Inc-Ich-Treatment/dp/B00176I3UA/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?

But be careful, while it's highly effective, Ich-X contains some cancerous stuff to human health. I recommend to go with Seachem's Paraguard for ICH, but it will take longer. You can combine Paraguard with Kanaplex to deal with bacterial infection if that's the case, but make sure to pump oxygen in the take since meds reduce it.
