Elmer Kieth, longtime editor of Guns magazine, wrote a book called "Sixguns":

about his long history in shooting. He was actually around as a young lad when some of the old "gunslingers" were still alive.
He mentions a simple trick he'd learned doing research that allowed the carry of SAA revolvers fully loaded.

One just sewed a strip of heavy "saddle skirting" leather to the top front of the holster, and punched a firing-pin sized hole through same.
You'd holster the weapon, draw the hammer back slightly, and insert the leather strip into the hammer recess. The hammer was lowered so that the firing pin went through the hole.

Result...The firing pin could not reach the primer of the chambered cartridge, and the strap functioned as a safety strap as well, holding the weapon in place till it was drawn.
