Have you listened to the radio adaptation from NPR? After the Christmas Special I was expecting it to be another cash-in load of old shite but it is absolutely excellent. Expensive but excellent. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Star-Wars-The-Complete-Trilogy/dp/1598875809
Lots of great detail about how the Death Star plans were intercepted and Luke's life on Tattoine in ep4 etc.
I'm currently enjoying ep5 but so far it is wonderful.
You mentioned that you are open to film adaptations - have you ever listened to the NPR radio dramas (full-cast recordings) of the original^((only)) trilogy? They're fun and they flesh out lots of little details.
Unfortunately, they are currently unavailable at Audible and appear to be out of print at Amazon. You might find them at a library, and they appear to be available at Archive.org, which I think is a legal/ legit site (someone correct me if I'm wrong and I'll edit this post).
The first two were produced back during the years of the original^((only)) trilogy's release, and RotJ came out about a decade later.
Anthony Daniels is in all three, Mark Hamill is in Star Wars and Empire, and Billy Dee Williams is in Empire. Most of the remaining performers aren't too well known, with a few exceptions: John Lithgow as Yoda, Ed Begley Jr. as Boba Fett, and Ed Asner as Jabba the Hutt.

Check out the radio drama version that NPR put out in the early 80s. Brock Peters was their Vader and did an amazing job of it. Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams return from the movie cast, and John Lithgow was their Yoda.
