Sunix DPU3000
I have this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JARYTVK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 for when I'm on the go. At home I have the sp4 dock, but this one works great to run external monitors on the go. I haven't had any issues with it.

According to the Hardforum thread, this active DP-VGA converter should be able to push all the common resolutions of the FW900 with no issues. I would do your own research, however.
Weird refresh rates are fine, just need an adapter that can go high enough pixel clock if you're going really high. Recommended reasonably cheap adapter is the screw in Tendak https://www.amazon.com/Tendak-Converter-Adapter-Portable-Connector/dp/B01B7CEOVK/ HDMI to VGA good for ~165MHz, if you need more, there's the Sunix DP to VGA (and DP and HDMI, it's a hub too) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JARYTVK/
