I threw out my LGA 771 Whiteboxes that I have had for past 7 or so years last month and decided to try and find a replacement. Today, I just got in a Supermicro SuperServer 6027TR-DTQRF as my replacement for those three machines. One side is going to have a set of E5-2680s (if they ever make it…) and the other will probably be using a pair of E5-2630Lv2’s for containers and I might be migrating my NAS to that machine as well.

Questions:

  • The backplane is a BPN-ADPX9-6SATA Backplane, so I assume I am limited only to SATA drives? I don’t really plan on using SAS, so it is not a big deal just curious.
  • Will any Supermicro 3.5” to 2.5” caddy work? There doesn’t seem to be any difference in Supermicro’s caddy lineup like there is with Dells.
Thinking of picking up a couple of these: https://www.amazon.com/Supermicro-MCP-220-00043-0N-3-5-convert-Tray/dp/B0028MD9WE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1537927978&sr=8-2&keywords=supermicro+3.5+to+2.5+adapter

  • Lastly and off-topic of the server, any suggestions for a wall-mounted network cabinet? I have the house’s patch panel, switch, modem, and router stuck in the back of the rack all haphazardly. It would be nice to just have the rack mostly isolated from the network for the house physically.

    Also, basement cooling is nice.

    Other unmentioned rack stuff:

Dell R610 – It’s currently being used as my everyday virtualization machine since I got rid of my old whiteboxes. Only bought it since it came with 6 sticks of 8GB DDR3 for $125. Will probably mess around with it as a router box.

Whitebox LGA 1366 w/ 2x X5660, 24GB DDR3, and 6TB usable in RAID 10. Used to be my main workstation around 4 years ago. Retired and currently working as a NAS/Container host with unraid. Might make one of the nodes from the new machine a new NAS if I get the low powered E5v2s though I am still thinking of getting a set of E5-2670v2. If I do retire it as a NAS, the case will be gutted and used to store my main workstation and just use 30’ HDMI runs.

Supermicro makes a drive sled that fits a 3.5" opening and accommodates 2.5" drives:

The Supermicro caddies are the same across all their stuff from the past decade at least. The ones with the black front and the pinkish-red eject lever, that is.

I have an old P4 1u 'SuperServer' and a brand new Dual Xeon 2u system and can swap drives at will.

In the past I have used dead WD 10k SATA disks as SSD caddies - rip out the dead 2.5" disk inside and it becomes a perfect adapter.

Was this the thing you bought? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Supermicro-Original-MCP-220-00043-0N-Frame-Enclosure/dp/B0028MD9WE
