Without getting into the whole pole shift thing, this PDF archive: http://www.pssurvival.com/ is an exhaustive collection of tons of free military survival and homesteading PDFs, and worth pulling down (edit: per-subject zip archives are here: http://www.pssurvival.com/PS/3-Updates/index.htm). You can use a tool like wget or HTTrack to mirror the whole archive.
A great non-free resource IMO is this one from Stackpole books.
Other how to books of an anarchistic nature:
There are a whole ton of books and military surplus gear out there, a lot of which can be found with a simple amazon or google search.
I personally like this series of books because they are not bug out only. There is a lot out there that is more prepper/survivalist oriented. For a more rural perspective the Foxfire books a long with the Country Wisdom books and Mother Earth News
In addition there is stuff like the Open Source Village Construction Set and quite a few other online resources like make and instructables that are the same deal just in a different format.
A piece of advice would be not to get caught up in the cultural presentation of information there is a lot of great post-collapse, survivalist, whatever, information out there that is not presented as such.
I would not recommend any to carry either (though the SAS survival handbook is one I have not had a chance to read). I went through several books my brother had and any of the small ones listed as "essential" or "pocket" were junk. Besides a few trapping options I did not know, I learned nothing even with minimal knowledge. The plant guides were crap on a stick. Even the fire starting was iffy on them all.
I would like to check out a large book like This one to read at home because of all of the pictures and illustrations actually showing you (as best as a book is able) the right way to do things. They even have a whole series covering gardening, country know how, natural medicine, and crafting in addition to survival. If anyone has experience with them I would love to hear if they are good.
I personally like Survival Wisdom and Know-How.
I guess it's not as extensive as other books, but it's got a ton of stuff on all kinds of situations. It goes over things such as shelter building, first aid, meal plans/menus, flora/fauna, getting & purifying water, surviving in multiple types of environments (i.e. jungle, desert, forest, arctic, etc), preparing for and surviving severe weather, gardening, and a lot of other stuff. It's a pretty good book that I like to frequently look through.
This book is a damn good place to start, or to just have as a general reference.
